Also known as the Island of the Swallows, Cozumel Island's sport fishing is the envy of the whole world.
Foreign anglers are suggested to arrive at Cancun International Airport, which receives flights from the main cities of the United States and some European cities.
Once in Cancun, there are two ways to get to Cozumel Island, the first is by boat or ferry that leaves from Playa del Carmen. This trip takes 30 minutes through the clear waters of the Mayan Riviera. The second is by Cessna aircraft from Cancun International Airport.
What to fish?
Cozumel Island's sport fishing is the envy of the whole world. Deep sea fishing is practiced being one of the best areas for marlin, sailfish, dorado, sierra, wahoo, tuna and barracuda. Fly fishing is mainly practiced in lagoons located in the north of the island. In these lagoons it is possible to fish for bonefish, permit, snook, snapper and barracuda.
Cozumel has been recognized worldwide as a great recreational spot for deep sea sport fishing and fly fishing as it is attractive for anglers to fish year round and catch large fish especially in spring and summer. The sport fisherman will find the most consistent fishing in the Atlantic including white and blue marlin.
Throughout the year, classic fly fishing species can be found in the lagoons near the northern tip of the island. Mostly you will find bonefish, small tarpon and if you are a little bit lucky it is feasible to find permit, barracuda and other reef species that abound in this area.
